History

Unfortunately, due to lack of technology in the past, CSUF PASA Kaibigan only has a permanent record of certain history.

 1986

  • Don Palpallatoc and Manny Gaudier co-founded the first Friendship Games, challenging other clubs to compete in CSU Fullerton Kaibigan’s first annual battle of the schools on September 20, 1986. This started the tradition of Friendship Games.

  • The games were nothing like what they are today. Originally, only clubs & organizations from CSUF would compete against one another.

    • As the years went by, we began inviting other schools to compete in the games and Friendship Games evolved to be a highlight for the younger Pilipinx community. The event has gone through many changes since it began, with new games being added or removed along the way (Like Nutcracker and Tidal Wave).

*Fun Fact: Glenn Paredes assisted Don and Manny in running the first Friendship Games while he was a student at Cal State, Fullerton. His daughter, Jacqui Paredes, now serves as the 37th Co-Coordinator of Friendship Games.

 1990

  • Theta Delta Beta was founded by a small, tight-knit group of friends who attended UC Irvine. The group went to Palm Springs during spring break (May, 1990) to DJ a fraternity party and afterwards, realized they wanted to start their own fraternity.

  • The original founding fathers from there threw their own parties which then got the word out to the CSUF Kaibigans.

*Fun Fact: Glenn Paredes also helped start Theta Delta Beta with his friends who attended UCI.

 1991

  • SPUF was created in 1991 by Ross Bascos, who was Vice President, and Jun De La Cruz. They were putting together a Master plan for Friendship Games and they wanted to create a shirt for remembrance so that people can buy it.  They brainstormed on a piece of paper and the words:

    Spirit

    Pride

    Unity

    Friendship

These words were written but the one who actually said it was Ross Bascos when he said, “Dang thats SPUF”.

1995

  • 10th Annual Friendship Games

  • The position of Friendship Games Coordinator was first established.

1999

  • 14th Annual Friendship Games

  • Six Texas Universities drove out to Fullerton to participate at the games. They were too small to compete as individual clubs, so they combined numbers and came together.

  • The event ended prematurely due to a participant being slashed in the face with a wooden stake and taken to the hospital.

    • Due to this, fences are rented and all attendees of Friendship Games are required to sign liability forms prior to their entrance. This is also why no one is allowed to stake anything into the ground during the event.

2000

  • 15th Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the first time the event used fences and liability forms due to the stabbing incident the previous year.

  • The event was held on the Performing Arts Lawn (PA Lawn), the area where the Nutwood Structure and the new side of the Performing Arts Building currently are.

2001

  • 16th Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the last time Friendship Games was held on the Soccer Field.

2005

  • 20th Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the last time Friendship Games would be coordinated as a solo position.

2006

  • 21st Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the first time Friendship Games was run by two coordinators.

  • Theta Delta Beta built the giant “FG” letters we use at the entrance. They were originally blue and orange to represent CSUF’s colors.

2008

  • 23rd Annual Friendship Games

  • Per request of the Marriot, the entrance to Friendship Games was moved from Lot E to the Kinesiology building. This was due to the noise from the year before. Despite the new entrance, noise complaints were still made from the residents west of CSUF because the sound from the event echoed off the buildings, and people were being loud in the State College Structure.

    • This is why Friendship Games enforces quiet hours when schools arrive to the event.

2009

  • 24th Annual Friendship Games

  • Friendship Games was pushed back to begin 2 hours later than before, due to the noise complaints from residents around CSUF the year prior.

  • This was the first year Infinite PASAbilities performed at Friendship Games. Their performance opened the event.

    • Infinite PASAbilities is a dance team established through CSUF PASA. They began a tradition to wear the official Friendship Games merch during their performance.

2010

  • 25th Annual Friendship Games

  • During the morning of Friendship Games, it started to rain. Due to the change in weather, registration needed to be relocated, the stage needed to be mopped, and the field needed to be repainted.

2011

  • 26th Annual Friendship Games

  • Friendship Games had a record breaking attendance of 43 schools.

  • This was the first year that both Friendship Games Co-Coordinators were female.

  • This was the first Friendship Games that had a cultural performance during half-time. Unfortunately, dancers were injured because the stage was too hot for them to dance barefoot.

    • Due to the injuries, Friendship Games no longer includes barefoot cultural performances.

  • This was the first time the games had more culturally and socially significant vendors like Filipino Bookstore, Barangay LA, and Bone-Marrow Registry.

  • This was the first time Friendship Games used Twitter as a live feed for the event, tweeting out scores and other announcements.

  • Due to an Anti-S.P.U.F. theme, CSUF PASA will no longer tolerate “haterade.”

  • This was the first time that Friendship Games hosted a Friendship Games Pre-Party (and fundraiser) which was held in Cantina Lounge.

2012

  • 27th Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the first time in CSUF PASA history that CSUF made it to final rampage.

  • CSUF PASA won first place overall in games and championship shirts were made to commemorate the milestone.

2014

  • 29th Annual Friendship Games

  • Due to the 2014 California drought, Tidal Wave was removed from the 29th Annual Friendship Games.

2015

  • 30th Annual Friendship Games

  • Thread the Needle was added to replace Tidal Wave.

2016

  • 31st Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the first time Friendship Games was held on the Intramural Fields since 2001.

    • Antonio Faustino, Jr. and Cristelle Ligasan, the Coordinators at the time, reworked the area when it was moved from the ECS Lawn.

  • Chanelle Natividad, the Sports Coordinator at the time, changed Thread the Needle to Up and Under.

2018

  • 33rd Annual Friendship Games

  • Stephanie Calangian, the Sports Coordinator at the time, had everyone start at the same time for Final Rampage.

  • Infinite PASAbilities broke their tradition of wearing Friendship Games merch for their performance and wore hockey jerseys instead.

2019

  • 34th Annual Friendship Games

  • Jeremy Rembulat and Stephanie Calangian, the coordinators at the time, created an internship opportunity exclusively for one lucky CSUF PASA member.

    • The intern position was created for the student to get a behind-the-scenes look on how much goes on in the planning of Friendship Games.

    • Kylie Tatom was the first Friendship Games intern.

  • Matthew Layson, the sports coordinator, held the SoCal picnic on campus under the bridge (UTB) of the Titan Student Union building.

    • This was the first time it was held on CSUF campus instead of at Chapman park.

  • The halftime show was fully sponsored by Kollective Hustle.

    • Jeremy Passion and Ceraadi headlined the event.

  • A cultural component was added for all schools during their roll call performances.

    • Schools got HYPED and creative this year. Some performances included mini skits, props, or music from the Philippines.

  • This was the most expensive Friendship Games to date.

2020

  • 35th Annual Friendship Games

  • Kylie Tatom and Marcel Alansalon, the coordinators at the time, were faced with the decision to either cancel the event or convert Friendship Games into a virtual setting due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

    • For the first-time ever, Friendship Games was a virtual celebration that streamed from Youtube Live. In addition to being streamed, Friendship Games held online e-games as a way to interact in a virtual setting. Winners received exclusive Friendship Games merch.

2021

  • 36th Annual Friendship Games

  • This was the first time Friendship Games allowed schools to earn points through participation on social media. Friendship Games released virtual contests which schools could earn 1 point for every post made by their members. Additional points could also be won by the school who gained the most likes on their SPUF chant on TikTok.

*Fun fact: The hashtag, #FG36, was created to keep track of virtual points. Many of the posts documenting the virtual experience can still be found under the hashtag on Instragram.

2022

  • 37th Annual Friendship Games

  • Friendship Games 37 became the first to resume in-person on the Intramural Fields after two years being virtual.

    • Due to security issues and safety concerns, Friendship Games had to come to a standstill.

  • Ylona Garcia headlined the event.

As the years have progressed, this event continues to grow in terms of size and scope. With this growth, Friendship Games has come to represent more than just Pilipino-American college students but has given a significant identity to individuals no matter what nationality.
